Copper is slowly becoming a very popular metal for making cookware and a more and more people are getting their hands on these beauties. But when it comes to copper utensils people are still not sure about if copper is safe for the purpose of cooking or not. This is because there are certain food items which naturally react with copper. Food items such as pickles should not be stored in copper containers as they are acidic in nature. Anything citrus such as a lemon based drink or citrus fruit juices such as orange juice is unsafe to be served in a copper glass. Yogurt or yogurt based items should also be kept away from copper utensils.

Health risks associated with copper indigestion

Gastrointestinal issues are common to arise with over ingestion of copper. The symptoms of copper toxicity are very identical to the symptoms of gastroenteritis which are diarrhea, vomiting, stomach ache and cramps. In case of copper poisoning, you may also have a metallic taste in your mouth and you may also feel weak and lethargic. If you notice any such symptoms, get in touch with your doctor immediately. If diagnosed at the correct time it can be cured. But if left untreated the symptoms may get worse.

Unlined Copper Utensils

Avoid using copper utensils such as copper cooking pots and pans which are unlined. The interior of the copper utensils should be lined with a non-reactive metal such as stainless steel or tin in order to prevent the copper from reacting with the contents.

Babies and young children

Copper utensils should not be used for preparing food for babies or young children. If you have been feeding your child with food being prepared in copper vessels and he has been showing symptoms of gastroenteritis, you should consult the doctor immediately. Always use stainless steel cookware to prepare meals for your kids especially if they are very young.
